Google ads catch people who are already searching for what you sell. Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram) put your offer in front of people who fit your customer profile before they search. If someone needs you urgently, start with Google. If your service is visual or you are building demand, start with Meta.
"Where should I spend my first ad dollars?" is one of the most common questions we hear. The honest answer depends on how your customers decide. Here is a simple way to choose, without the jargon.
The core difference: intent versus interruption
Google search ads appear when someone types a search such as "AC repair near me." That person already has the problem and is looking for a provider right now. You are answering a question they asked.
Meta ads appear while people scroll Facebook and Instagram. They did not ask for you, so the ad has to earn attention with a clear offer, good visuals and the right audience. You are starting the conversation.
Neither is better. They do different jobs.
When to start with Google
- Customers search when they need you: repairs, emergencies, urgent services, "near me" searches.
- You want people ready to call now.
- Your service is easy to describe in a few words.
The trade-off: you only reach people who search, and popular search terms can be competitive.
When to start with Meta
- Your service is visual or considered: remodeling, landscaping, beauty and wellness, real estate, events.
- You have a clear offer or promotion to put in front of the right neighborhood or audience.
- You want to build awareness and keep reaching people who have already visited your site.
The trade-off: people were not looking for you, so results depend heavily on the creative and the offer.
A quick comparison
| Google search ads | Meta ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Customer mindset | Searching for a solution now | Scrolling, not yet looking |
| Best for | Urgent and high-intent services | Visual services, offers, awareness |
| What matters most | Keywords, landing page, call tracking | Creative, offer, audience |
| Typical first result | Calls from ready buyers | Messages, quote requests, awareness |
What about TikTok?
TikTok can work for visual businesses and younger audiences, but it often brings views and clicks without many calls. Treat it as a test with a small share of budget, and judge it by leads, not views. In one of the example reports on our advertising page, a platform that produced clicks but almost no calls was simply paused.
Before you spend anything
- Fix the landing page. It should load fast, work on a phone and show one clear next step.
- Set up tracking. Pixel, tags and call tracking confirmed, and a test lead received, before the first dollar is spent. If a lead cannot be traced to the ad, you cannot improve the ad.
- Set a realistic budget. Around $500 a month of ad spend is a realistic minimum. Below that, there is rarely enough data to learn from.
- Write the offer first. One problem, one offer, one next step.
How to judge results honestly
Look at cost per lead and, more importantly, what happened to those leads. Cheap leads that never answer the phone are not cheap. Check weekly in the first months, move budget toward whatever is actually producing calls and pause what is not. A monthly report should tell you what worked, what did not and what changes next, in plain language.
The short version
Urgent service with people already searching: begin with Google. Visual service or demand to build: begin with Meta. Add the other once the first is working and tracked. Frequently asked questions
Should a local business use Google Ads or Meta Ads first?
If customers actively search for what you do and need it soon (repairs, emergency services), start with Google. If your service is visual or considered, or you need to build awareness and run offers, start with Meta. Many businesses end up using both.
What is the minimum ad budget that makes sense?
A realistic minimum is around $500 a month in ad spend. Below that there is usually not enough data to learn from, and an honest agency will tell you so.
How long before ads bring leads?
Many campaigns bring the first real leads within about two weeks. Full optimization usually takes 30 to 60 days as the campaigns are tuned on real results.
Do I need a website before running ads?
Yes. Ads send people somewhere, and a slow or confusing page wastes the click. Fix the page, tracking and contact path before spending on traffic.
Is TikTok worth it for a local business?
Sometimes. It can work for visual businesses and younger audiences, but it often brings clicks without calls. Test it with a small share of budget and judge it by calls, not views.
