How Much Does a Small Business Website Cost? (And Why You Don’t Need a $10,000 One)

What actually drives website prices up, what a fair price includes, the red flags in a quote, and what a good small business site costs at BAA.

Quick answer

A good small business website does not need a five-figure budget. What you pay for should be speed, a clear message, a design built around your customer and a simple way to contact you. At BAA, Starter sites start at $650 and Professional sites start at $950. Larger sites and online stores are quoted on a call.

Somewhere along the way, "professional website" started meaning "five-figure invoice." It does not have to. Most local service businesses, the landscapers, contractors, staffing agencies, clinics and shops we build for, do not need a custom-coded platform with a six-month build cycle. They need a fast, clean, mobile-first site that makes it obvious what they do and how to reach them.

Why website quotes vary so much

If you have asked for two or three quotes, you have probably seen prices that are thousands of dollars apart for what sounds like the same thing. Usually it is not the same thing. One quote may include copywriting, SEO setup, a year of hosting and a lead-capture page. Another may be a bare template with your logo on it. Before comparing prices, compare what each one actually includes.

What actually drives the price up

Big agency quotes are not usually paying for better code. They are paying for account managers, sales layers and overhead that have nothing to do with your site. Strip that out and a well-built small business site is a much smaller project than most people assume, especially when it is built on a platform your team can maintain afterward, like WordPress or Shopify, instead of a proprietary system that locks you in.

The things that genuinely change the scope, and the price, are:

  • Number of pages. A five-page site and a fifty-page site are different projects.
  • Selling online. A store with products, checkout, shipping and taxes is more work than a site that explains your services.
  • Custom features. Booking systems, customer portals, integrations with your CRM or calendar.
  • Content. Whether you provide the copy and photos or someone writes and shoots them for you.
  • Design depth. Truly custom design versus a lightly customized theme.

What a fair price should include

Whatever you pay, a site that is meant to bring in customers should include these basics. If a quote does not mention them, ask.

  • A mobile-first design, tested on real phones, not just a resized desktop layout.
  • Fast loading: compressed images, clean code and caching set up from the start.
  • Basic SEO setup: proper page titles, descriptions, site structure and a sitemap.
  • A clear contact path on every page: tap-to-call, a short form, and a map if you serve a local area.
  • Hosting and security for at least the first year, stated plainly.
  • Ownership. The domain, the content and the design are yours.

Red flags in a website quote

  • A very low price with no scope. If the quote does not say what you get, assume the answer is "less than you think."
  • Pressure to decide today. A good project does not expire at midnight.
  • No mention of mobile. Most of your visitors are likely on a phone, so a quote that skips it is a warning sign.
  • Lock-in. A proprietary builder that you cannot move away from if you ever want to change providers.
  • Vague timelines. "Eight to twelve weeks, depending" usually means nobody has planned the work.

What fair pricing looks like at BAA

We publish our starting prices on purpose. Our Starter plan starts at $650 and our Professional plan starts at $950 for a site of up to 15 pages with custom design, a mobile-first build, contact forms, advanced SEO setup, Google Maps and one year of hosting. Online stores, larger sites and projects with custom features are quoted on a call, because the honest answer depends on what you actually need. Most sites go from kickoff call to launch in about 14 days.

That is not a teaser rate with fees bolted on later. It is the real starting point for a real site.

The part that actually matters

A cheap site that does not load fast, does not work on a phone and does not make it obvious how to contact you is expensive at any price. A fairly priced site built around getting someone to call or fill out a form is the whole point. That is the difference to shop for, not the size of the invoice.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a small business website cost?

It depends on the number of pages, whether you sell online and how much custom work is involved. A focused site for a local service business does not need a five-figure budget. At BAA, Starter plans start at $650 and Professional plans start at $950.

Why do agency website quotes vary so much?

Quotes bundle different things: design, copywriting, SEO setup, hosting, support and the agency's overhead. Two quotes with a very different price are often describing very different scopes, so compare line by line.

Is a cheap website worth it?

Only if it loads fast, works on a phone and makes it obvious how to contact you. A cheap site that fails those three things costs you customers every month, so it is expensive at any price.

What is the difference between a template and a custom design?

A template is a pre-made layout with your logo and colors dropped in. A custom design is built around your brand, your customer and the one action you want visitors to take.

Should I pay monthly or once for a website?

Both models are common. Ask what is included in any monthly fee (hosting, updates, support) and what happens to your site if you stop paying. You should always own your domain and your content.
